POSITION: Summer Middle School Group Leader
DESCRIPTION:

Sunrise’s summer programs for middle school students are catered for students going into 8th and 9th grade. Our summer program builds students’ 21st Century Skills, provides opportunities for them to explore post-secondary options, and prepares them to make a successful transition to high school. These programs are held at South Philadelphia High School for six weeks, Monday-Friday, July 5-August 11.

This is a part-time, seasonal position responsible for ensuring the health and safety of all enrolled students. Group Leaders work with students to make sure they are engaged and participating in all program activities. Group Leaders also work with each other and the Program Manager to design and lead hands-on, project-based activities that help students build skills, begin to explore potential careers of interest, learn more about college, and feel more prepared for high school. Group Leaders do not just monitor activities, they create and lead activities.

All Jumpstart staff will be required to attend training/planning sessions in June (times TBD). All employees are required to submit up-to-date background clearances and health assessments before they can begin working with young people.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Manage student participation and behavior, using positive behavior tactics to get students engaged and actively participating in all daily program activities

2. Available to work Monday – Friday, July 5th – August 12th, 8 AM – 3 PM. Group Leaders will spend about 20 hours total in June helping to plan and coordinate summer activities.

3. Manage daily sign in and out sheets, ensuring students sign in upon program arrival and sign out at the end of each day

4. Ensure students stay on schedule and transition smoothly from one activity to the next

5. Monitor and Lead recreation and enrichment activities. Work with Program Manager to design and lead hands-on activities in a project-based format

6. Maintain a positive class environment and provide personalized support to students

7. Ensure students are using supplies and program spaces respectfully

8. Practice open communication with program manager and teachers to ensure successful implementation of program activities

9. Communicate with caregivers and family members when needed regarding student behaviors, both positive and negative

10. Attend meetings and trainings as required

REQUIREMENTS:

-Minimum of an Associate’s degree in Education, Social Work, Psychology, Child Development, Human Services, or a related field. Bachelor’s degree preferred. Can also be actively pursuing Bachelor’s degree, as long as you have significant experience working with young people.

-A minimum of 1-years experience working with middle school students in a school, community, or summer camp setting

-Knowledge of and experience with project-based learning

-Demonstrated experience implementing (not just monitoring) hands-on activities with middle school students

-Enthusiasm for helping students become better at communicating, team work, problem solving, and being creative

-Enthusiasm for helping students explore their future career options and learning more about going to college

-Positive communication skills

-Demonstrated enthusiasm and dedication to improving the lives of youth and families

-Able to work independently and as part of a team

-Friendly, courteous manner

-Dependable and reliable
