Each year, PHENND’s K-16 Partnerships Network hosts a day long convening about university, school, and community partnerships. This year’s theme will be “PHENND goes to School.” The institute will be a day of planning, reflection, and sharing of information on partnerships that take place in K-12 schools.

Penn State Center for Science and the Schools: Bridging Research and Education in STEM
Amanda J. Smith, STEM Outreach & Engagement Liaison
Current teaching standards in STEM require teachers to incorporate the practices and 21st century thinking skills of STEM research into their teaching. CSATS works collaboratively with scientists and engineers at Penn State and in industries to design, develop, and implement many outreach programs and workshops for K-16 education. These programs promote teachers’ abilities to prepare the future STEM workforce by providing learning experiences that engage students in the practices and thinking used by scientists and engineers.

Panel Discussion: Reflections on Partnerships – A Principal’s Perspective featuring: Principal LeRoy Hall Jr. of Henry H. Houston Elementary & Principal Andrew Lukov of Southwark Elementary
Moderated By Amy Cohen, Executive Director of the Honey W. Nashman Center for Civic Engagement and Public Service at George Washington University
Amy brings a wealth of experience in service-learning and civic engagement to her role at GW. She served for nearly a decade as the director of the federal service-learning program, Learn and Serve America at the Corporation for National and Community Service, which is also the parent agency for AmeriCorps and Senior Corps. Prior to coming to GW she served as Associate Vice President for US Programs at Save the Children. Her career in academic service and civic engagement began at the University of Pennsylvania, where she worked at the Netter Center for Community Partnerships, an international leader in university- community partnerships.

ArtistYear Philadelphia – Fellows from the Curtis Institute of Music and Drexel University work full-time in Philadelphia public schools to deliver an issue-based arts curriculum that inspires active youth citizens. Christine Witkowski, Director, ArtistYear Philadelphia, and current Fellow will share insights on how to train and support recent arts college grads to work effectively and collaboratively in a school setting.
