Persistent Racial Gaps in SAT Scores

A new report from the Brookings Institution finds that large racial gaps in SAT scores make it difficult for African American and Latino students to attend college and achieve upward mobility. Race Gaps in SAT Scores Highlight Inequality and Hinder Upward Mobility finds that black students are overrepresented among the very lowest SAT scores in math, results that “reflect and reinforce racial inequalities across generations.” The authors note that some research indicates that the gap could be even wider if the SAT had a wider range of possible scores like the LSAT, which has a more pronounced racial gap.
