The John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge is seeking two environmental education interns from the greater Philadelphia commuting area to join our team and represent the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for this unique internship opportunity. Gain experience assisting with the Urban National Wildlife Initiative in the city of Philadelphia by facilitating partnerships, providing curriculum based environmental education and natural resource interpretation, and assisting with visitor center operations and refuge communications. Work with a variety of diverse audiences.
Major Duties Include:
-Environmental Education: Develops a minimum of three environmental education programs that are standards based and geared towards an audience in grades 3-7. The programs will highlight urban wildlife and the student’s relationship with nature. The program will provide the students with an understanding of the US Fish & Wildlife Service and its mission, as well as an environmentally themed take home message. These programs will be presented at least twice a week during the school year to targeted schools.
-Interpretation: Develops a minimum of 3 formal and informal public education programs designed for the general urban public that will be presented at the refuge at least twice a month. These programs will highlight the interdependence of people and the environment.
-Visitor Center Operations: Assists with visitor center operations; including greeting visitors, staffing the front desk, and providing support to volunteers staffing the visitor center. This will entail assisting visitors in planning their visit, answering phones, and other duties as assigned.
-Partnerships: Coordinates with local community and conservation organizations to increase awareness of the wildlife refuge and US Fish and Wildlife Service. Maintains working relationships with partners by attending a variety of events and functions, giving informative talks, and asking for volunteer or other assistance.
-Communication: Effectively communicates with urban audiences through interpretive activities that aid in implementing the refuge’s outreach program. Drafts a variety of written materials including news releases, articles, correspondence, event flyers, and social media messages. These materials aid in increasing understanding of the US Fish and Wildlife Service mission, encourage attendance at or assistance with special events, and explain the goals and objectives of the refuge.
Other Duties:
Maintains equipment and supplies.
May operate a government vehicle (Driver’s license required.)
