Mt. Airy Reads Community Coordinator
Hours: temporary full-time (35 hours) from October through June with some evenings and weekends
Established in 1980, Mt. Airy USA is a nationally-recognized nonprofit organization in Northwest Philadelphia that preserves, empowers and advances the vitality and diversity of Mt. Airy by stimulating community-centered neighborhood development. Mt. Airy USA provides housing counseling and financial literacy services, advances real estate development, promotes small businesses and a vibrant commercial corridor and facilitates investment in neighborhood public schools.
The Mt. Airy Reads Community Coordinator will play an important role in growing our neighborhood-based approach to supporting early childhood literacy, one of the major focus areas of the Mt. Airy Schools Coalition. The Coordinator’s primary responsibility will be to build a new volunteer recruitment and management system to support literacy-based programming for our 6 local public elementary schools: A.B. Day, Emlen, Houston, Henry, Lingelbach, and Jenks. The Coordinator will report to Mt. Airy USA’s Director of Community Programs and will also work closely with school staff, community members, and partners. This position is grant-funded for 1 year with high potential for continuation.
Job responsibilities will include:
- Community Volunteer Network Pilot Program
a. Design and pilot a framework to support and evaluate the impact of the new Mt. Airy Schools Coalition Community Volunteer Network.
b. Coordinate with schools to assess needs and volunteer opportunities.
c. Assess status of school libraries and develop action plan with input from principals and staff.
d. Coordinate volunteer recruitment, training, placement, and management.
2. Coordinate Mt. Airy Reads Week programming and evaluation, a week-long community celebration of reading
3. Assist with coordination of special programs for schools with arts-based literacy focus.
4. Plan other literacy-related programming, including but not limited to book swaps/book collections, parent workshops, story times, programs for childcare providers, etc.
5. Provide sharable literacy-related content for Go Mt. Airy’s audience on social media and web.
6. Research new avenues for community-based support for literacy inside and outside of the classroom.
7. Other duties as assigned.
