Toward a broader understanding of health

Posted by Urban Institute on June 20, 2016

Americans rank lower than their counterparts in other wealthy countries on health indicators such as life expectancy, infant mortality, obesity, and heart disease. A new report from the Urban Institute recommends looking beyond the doctor’s office for possible answers. The Picture of Health notes that income is closely tied to health, with Americans in poverty suffering higher rates of asthma and malnutrition as well as more frequent mental health issues. The report points to education and housing as two other factors beyond traditional health care that can have serious effects on Americans’ health outcomes.
