Philadelphia Futures provides low-income, first-generation-to-college students with the tools, resources, and opportunities necessary for admission to and success in college. Our direct access programs, Sponsor-A-Scholar (SAS) and College Connection, provide academic enrichment, college guidance, and a range of other services for promising high school students attending Philadelphia’s public, charter, and parochial high schools.

Summer Writing Instructor
The Summer Writing Instructor for our Temple University summer program for rising high school juniors will work collaboratively with another instructor to teach the writing portions of a 4-week course focusing on career exposure and exploration. The course enrolls approximately 35 rising high school juniors and meets daily at Temple University’s Fox School of Business. The Writing Instructor is expected to attend all lectures, learning course content along the way, and support the content instructor at all times. The instructor’s primary responsibility will be to lead ½ day sessions that teach students how to demonstrate their knowledge and conduct research in the forms of reports and reports and presentations (both written and oral). Though it would be an asset, previous experience with career exploration and exposure programs is not required for this position.

Specific responsibilities include: (1) attending all course sessions and reinforcing student participation and appropriate behavior during those sessions; (2) planning and teaching the writing portion of the students’ day in collaboration with content instructors and the Academics staff at Philadelphia Futures; (3) helping students to develop their writing and research skills in relation to course content; (4) reporting daily on student attendance and progress; (5) guiding students in their preparation for the culminating presentations; (6) administering and submitting assessment reports.

Qualifications for Instructional Positions: Three-five years relevant teaching experience (preferably teaching high school level); demonstrated commitment to the education of Philadelphia public high school students and a clear understanding of related challenges; a teaching style that is structured, positive, and engaging; strong communication and organizational skills; FBI and Child Abuse Clearances if hired.

Dates: To be determined, but likely Mondays-Fridays from July 5, 2016-August 3, 2016.

Compensation: Compensation is competitive and commensurate with experience.
