The Mission Continues Seeks Applications for Post-9/11 Veteran Nonprofit Fellowships
The Mission Continues empowers veterans facing the challenge of adjusting to life at home to find new missions. Through the Mission Continues, veterans serve their country in new ways by engaging in innovative and action-oriented programs.
As part of this mission, the organization’s Fellowship program harnesses post-9/11 veterans’ strengths, skills, and compassion by empowering them to volunteer with nonprofit organizations in their communities on a daily basis.
Mission Continues fellowships require twenty hours of service per week for twenty-six weeks at a local nonprofit organization. Fellows are encouraged to choose an organization based on their own personal passions. Current and alumni fellows have worked at organizations that address issues ranging from disaster preparedness to education for low-income youth to training service dogs for wounded veterans. These host organizations include Habitat for Humanity, the American Red Cross, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Mothers Against Drunk Driving, and many more. To date, more than six hundred nonprofit and community organizations have hosted a Mission Continues fellow.
Fellows are awarded a cost-of-living stipend to offset expenses while they are serving their fellowship. The stipend is variable by location and based on nationally developed stipend scales for service-related fellowships.
Fellows attend a three-day orientation, joining other post-9/11 veterans from their fellowship class for a weekend of training, service, and camaraderie. Upon returning home from orientation, fellows officially begin their fellowships at their host organizations.
To be eligible, applicants must have served in the United States military after September 11, 2001; attained an honorable discharge after a minimum of twenty-four months of military service (unless serious injury was sustained, preventing further service); and have a clean criminal record. Applicants may no longer be serving on active duty or serving in the National Guard or Reserve (IRR/ING status is acceptable). The 2016 Bravo Class of fellows will serve from April 25 to October 23, 2016, with orientation to take place in Seattle, Washington. Currently, there are two more classes planned for 2016 (“Charlie” and “Delta”), with later application times and different orientation cities.
See the Mission Continues website for complete program guidelines, a list of host organizations, and application instructions.
DEADLINE: JANUARY 11, 2016
