As the new school year starts, I am happy to invite you to the upcoming 62nd annual Pennsylvania Council for the Social Studies Conference in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania on October 15-17, 2015. PCSS is an organization that has had a long tradition of supporting all the social studies related disciplines throughout the state. As an advocate for social studies at all levels of education, PCSS promotes the analysis, dissemination, and evaluation of instructional materials and programs for effective social studies education in the Commonwealth. In addition, the organization makes recommendations on certification requirements for educators involved in teaching social studies. Most importantly, PCSS assists local social studies councils in organizing professional development and cooperates with schools, school districts, intermediate units, and other interested parties on social studies projects. This year’s conference theme is “Conceptual Teaching and Learning for the 21st Century Social Studies Classroom”, a theme which will be addressed at the conference on the main conference day of Friday, October 16th, in the more than forty scheduled sessions on social studies topics.

On Thursday, October 15th, the Pennsylvania Department of Education will join with PCSS for a free pre-conference seminar to help educators gain an understanding of the expectations associated with the implementation of Act 70 which focuses on how each school district implements instruction dealing with the Holocaust and genocide. Receive training and complimentary instructional materials that will support quality implementation of appropriate instruction that meets the requirements of the Act. The seminar is complimentary and brought to you by PCSS and several partnerships as a public service.

Registration is required by September 30th. The registration form is attached for your convenience. Note that you need to make hotel reservations by then to secure the $102 plus tax rate. The earlier you register and reserve your room, the easier you make it for the conference planners, so thank you for your consideration.
