Description
Puentes Hacia el Futuro, Puentes de Salud’s education and wellness program, is predicated upon the well-evidenced fact that education is inextricably tied to the health of individuals and communities. The mission of Puentes Hacia El Futuro is to improve the educational achievement of children in the South Philadelphia Latino immigrant community, in order to improve long-term health outcomes, as well as to provide support in the context of extremely limited educational resources. The purpose of this position is to take an active role in preparing for, leading, and following up on in-class and/or after-school education sessions and activities. The Graduate Intern will work closely with healthcare professionals, educators, and leaders in the Puentes organization, gain an understanding of the social determinants of health impacting our community, non-profit organizations, and receive valuable mentorship.
Requirements
This internship is available to a graduate student at a master degree level or above. We are seeking a highly motivated, independent person with excellent interpersonal skills to join an enthusiastic group that is passionate about supporting the education, health, and wellness of Hispanic/Latino children. Intermediate/Advanced level Spanish is required.
Primary Learning Objectives
● To apply knowledge from Graduate coursework to practice in the field
● To learn additional skills needed for work in related field
● To understand the community context, including the social environment within which the communities live
● To participate in projects useful to the organization which also allows the student to refine professional skills
● To enhance the student’s opportunity for future job placement
● To explore opportunities for a Capstone project or thesis based on the interest of the student and needs of the organization
Professional Development
● Opportunity to interact and shadow professionals in fields such as of medicine, public health, education, social work, nursing.
● To participate in a project useful to the organization which also allows the student to refine professional skills and enhance the student’s opportunity for future job placement.
● Attend at least one Puentes de Salud monthly In-Service session. This series of talks exposes team leaders to community-related topics covered by experts who serve the Latino community in a variety of capacities.
● Opportunity to explore and develop Capstone/Thesis project ideas, training, and data based on the students interests and the organizations needs. Note: Research for publishing purposes is not allowed.
Responsibilities
● Preparation, facilitation, and follow-up tasks for assigned sessions (may require additional hours off-site. Total hours are designed on an individual basis based on need and credit/hour requirements).
● Take an active role in recruiting, training, and guiding new volunteers.
● Design and promote positive health & wellness educational activities.
● Participate in identifying short and long term goals for the program and methods to reach them.
● Build relationships and work with parents, family members, and external resources (such as psychologists, teachers, etc) to enhance children’s educational experience.
● Work with the Puentes leadership team (coordinators, health care professionals, teachers, and tutors, community health workers) to support the development of students in the program and create curriculum.
Program Opportunities
Each Graduate Intern will receive individualized mentorship that fulfills the intern’s interests and any originating program requirements. The internship will be primarily completed in the After-School Tutoring program. Special projects may include: Kindergarten Assistance Program, In-Class Assistance Programs for grades 1-8, organizing community events at Puentes/Southwark, Designing and implementing workshops for youth or adults in the community, outreach presentations to universities.
Hours
Must commit to sessions at least twice per week: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Weekly schedules must remain constant for each semester. Specific hours, schedules, and total Semester Hours are arranged on an individual basis dependent upon each sending university or program. Non-program based internships require approximately 6 hours per week for the duration of the semester from September 29 – December 3, 2015. Spring semester dates will be from February – May 5, 2016.
Evaluation/Documentation
All forms and evaluations will be completed by the student. The program supervisor/site preceptor will communicate directly to the sending University or program. Weekly and monthly meetings will be held between supervisor and graduate intern to discuss progress. All necessary documentation will be provided and all policies established by Puentes de Salud, School District of Philadelphia, and the sending university or program must be followed.
