College Readiness Stagnates among Low-Income Students

The number of low-income students meeting college readiness benchmarks remained flat in 2014 for the fifth straight year, according to a new report from ACT and the National Council for Community and Education Partnerships. Half of low-income students who took the ACT test didn’t meet a single benchmark, according to the report. The authors argue that college access and readiness programs must be expanded to reach students no later than sixth to eighth grade when achievement gaps have already emerged between low-income students and their more affluent peers.
