The LGBT Community and the EITC
Posted by Center for American Progress on March 23, 2015
People who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT)-a disproportionate number of whom are living in poverty-would benefit substantially from proposed modifications to the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), according to a new report from the Center for American Progress. Many same-sex couples have recently earned the right to legally marry; those couples now can file jointly to claim EITC benefits, according to the report. The report argues, however, that Congress should pass several bipartisan proposals to strengthen the EITC for the LGBT community. These proposals include lifting the current restriction that makes childless adults under age 25 ineligible for the EITC and increasing the value of the EITC for workers without qualifying children, since so many same-sex couples are not currently raising children.
