Tutor Trainer for Adult Literacy, Mayor’s Commission on Literacy

Posted by Mayor's Commission on Literacy on March 23, 2015

The Mayor’s Commission on Literacy works to ensure that adults in Philadelphia have access to high-quality education and support. Among the ways we work on achieving that goal is to provide free tutor training to adults who want to give to their community by sharing their talent and passion for education as tutors and thus helping the estimated 550,000 adults in the city functioning below basic adult education levels to qualify for family-sustaining jobs and post-secondary training and education.

The Mayor’s Commission on Literacy in Philadelphia seeks one or more tutor trainers to provide Basic, ESL and GED® tutor trainings for adult volunteers offered fifteen times per annum. Each successful contractor will be expected to provide five or six trainings (Basic, GED® and/or Basic). Each of the trainings includes between three to eight hours of face-to-face instruction, either on Wednesday evenings or Saturdays, with another three to eight hours of online facilitation over a one to two-week period. Trainings average fifteen volunteer participants. Specify in your application if you are able to offer Basic, ESL and/or GED® tutor training, and your qualifications relevant to each. If you are applying to offer GED® tutor training, specify your familiarity with the College and Career Readiness Standards for Adult Education, and their relevance to GED® preparation.

Trainers follow a fully-developed curriculum, but must also bring to the trainings their own thorough knowledge and experience with adult basic literacy, GED® preparation, and ESL instruction, experience in working with volunteer tutors, and experience in training tutors or teachers.

Trainers provide volunteer tutors with strategies and resources to use when working with adult learners, and must model outstanding adult teaching practices Trainers will be expected to facilitate the online part of the course, and will be trained in successful facilitation. Preference will be given to trainers with some online facilitation experience as well as face to face instruction.
