Workshop on Integrated Pest Management (IPM) in Pennsylvania Schools

Pests in schools can be an ongoing headache for school facility personnel. Pests can damage property, contaminate food, cause health problems and interfere with normal operations. To promote safe and effective pest management, Pennsylvania law requires that schools implement an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program to manage pests in and around school grounds. This workshop will help you understand what the law requires, what a quality school IPM program consists of and how you can improve your school’s performance in IPM.

– The Pittsburgh Public Schools Administrators and Facilities Staff – recipients of the IPM Star Certification by the IPM Institute of America
– Penn State IPM Specialists
– PA Department of Agriculture staff in charge of pesticide regulations and compliance assistance.

Who Should Attend?
– School District Administrators
– Facilities Managers
– Food Service Directors
– Environmental Safety Directors
– Principals and any personnel in charge of pest control

Participants Will:
– Understand what is included in an IPM program for schools
– Know what the law requires of school districts regarding IPM in their facilities
– Learn from Pittsburgh facilities how they initiated their IPM program
– Participate in a school walk-through to learn to identify IPM “critical control points”
– Discuss how to design and begin an IPM program
– Learn about components of an IPM contract for outside contractors
– Know who to call for help for school IPM and pest issues

Resources include:  “IPM in Pennsylvania Schools:  A How-to Manual” containing sample IPM plans, contracts, parental notification, advice on setting up your IPM program, IPM protocols for specific pests.

PESTICIDE RE-CERTIFICATION CREDITS IN CATEGORY 23 ARE APPLIED FOR

Cost:  FREE! The estimated value of the workshop is $120 per person. Funding is provided by a grant from EPA and the IPM Institute of North America. Lunch and refreshments will be provided.
