NCAN Launches New E-Learning Units on FAFSA Completion and Students Experiencing Homelessness

Posted by National College Access Network on February 2, 2015

As FAFSA completion season begins, could you use a primer or refresher on how to assist students and families? If you work with youth experiencing homelessness, are you knowledgeable about the special circumstances they face in transitioning from high school to higher education? NCAN’s (National College Access Network) e-learning platform, Fundamentals for College Access & Success Professionals, can help.  Please go to: http://www.collegeaccess.org/ELearning

Two new units are available on the platform beginning today. Special thanks to our expert content development partners uAspire and the National Association for the Education of Homeless Children and Youth.

FAFSA Completion 101 (90 minutes)
FAFSA completion can be confusing for the student and sometimes for the people helping them complete it too! This unit dives deep on best practices, tips, and tricks for FAFSA completion, highlighting common misperceptions and roadblocks to assure accurate and on time completion. This is not your typical FAFSA 101 page by page – it will test your knowledge, build your confidence, and in turn – support your students! Content of this unit provided by NCAN member uAspire. Cost: Free for NCAN members in 2015/$119 for non-members. For more information please go to https://www.uaspire.org/

Postsecondary Advising for Youth Experiencing Homelessness (45 minutes)
This unit provides an overview on how to assist McKinney-Vento eligible students that transition from high school to postsecondary education programs. Best practices are shared for high school and college advisors working with homeless youth to eliminate barriers experienced when homeless youth access postsecondary education programs. Content of this unit provided by National Association for the Education of Homeless Children and Youth. Cost: Free during 2015 for NCAN members/$59 for nonmembers. Please go to http://www.naehcy.org/
