Temple in Jamica: INTERNATIONAL SERVICE LEARNING IN JAMAICA

EXPERIENCE A MORE ‘REAL’ JAMAICA
(IT’S MORE THAN BEACH AND SUN)

We’ll study issues faced by Third World countries in the context of gender, race and class; community development; education; and globalization.
The program combines community-service learning, research, and educational tourism.  Students become involved with ongoing education and development projects in their area: they select a service/field placement and study in depth an individually selected topic. Course reading are provided before departure.
Field placements include schools (early childhood, primary & high school; alternative schooling for pregnant teens); community education; public health; Rural Agricultural Development Agency (support development of farmer cooperatives, marketing, agriculture/farmer education).
2015 research projects: (1) process and outcomes of a church-school-community partnership focused on life-skills and computer-based literacy for young people and community members.  (2) global service learning process and outcomes: the Yallahs-Temple partnership.
We are located in the rural town of Yallahs, about 45 minutes outside Kingston. Lodging is in a lovely beachfront villa with Internet access.  We work with local people, meet with faculty and students at the University of the West Indies, and learn the everyday joys and struggles of living in “the real Jamaica.”

Program fee: $1900 (includes lodging, most meals, local transportation, and educational activities).  Temple tuition, air travel, lunches, and some weekend activities not included.
