Study: Summer jobs reduce crime
Posted by University of Pennsylvania on January 12, 2015
A recent University of Pennsylvania study found that Chicago’s summer job program lowers the rate of violent crimes among teens.
Those randomly chosen to receive the eight-week positions were arrested 43 percent fewer times than their peers. In addition, this gap continued to widen months after the program’s completion. The study shows that a relatively low-cost and short-term summer jobs program can have an outsize impact on communities.
