Affordable Care Act coverage Open Enrollment Period
Posted by U.S. Department of Health and Human Services on November 17, 2014
Enrollment opens for Affordable Care Act coverage
It is almost time to apply for health care insurance through the federal marketplace, also known as the Affordable Care Act or Obamacare.
November 15th is when open enrollment begins, which is the first opportunity to sign up for insurance for 2015. If you want your insurance to begin on January 1st, you have to sign up for a health insurance plan by December 15th.
All 2014 Marketplace coverage ends Dec. 31st, no matter when you started to pay for your coverage. You have the option to continue your current coverage.
If you don’t purchase a policy by December 15th, the deadline for open enrollment is not over. You will have until February 15th to purchase 2015 coverage. But you have to act by that final deadline. If you miss it, you will only be able to sign up for a health plan if you have a qualifying event and can sign up during a special enrollment period.
