Mighty Writers seeks mentors for African American boys

Mighty Writers, with studios at 39th and Lancaster in West Philadelphia and 15th and Christian in South Philadelphia, has taught kids how to write and think clearly for five years. But that’s not all it does. In West Philadelphia, Mighty Writers is looking for boys ages 7 to 17  and male mentors to take part in its free mentorship program. Mighty Writers mentors girls, too.

Nationally, one in three African American boys and one in six Latino boys are at risk of incarceration in their lifetime. Not only that, the rate of incarceration is endangering boys at younger and younger ages.

With the graduation rate for African American boys hovering at 45 percent, the need for supportive mentors is critical. The Mighty Writers West mentorship program provides caring volunteers who are committed to developing supportive, writing-based one-on-one relationships with young people. The responsibilities of Mighty Writers West mentors include committing to a minimum six-month commitment to develop and maintain a relationship with mentee; meet with the mentee on a weekly basis to establish a working relationship and to support the mentee in writing and broader goals; and assist the mentee in solving school-related and other problems that interfere with his success at school or elsewhere.
