The Center for Environmental Transformation (CFET) is an environmental retreat center with an urban farm located in Camden, NJ that engages and educates people of all backgrounds to practice a more environmentally responsible way of living on the planet. Founded out of a faith community, rooted in the Roman Catholic tradition of social and environmental justice, CFET works in partnership with the community to advance solutions to environmental challenges and to create a sustainable and healthy source of fresh food.
Position Overview
The Executive Director (ED) is responsible for CFET’s achievement of its mission and financial objectives through direction and oversight of organizational strategy and implementation, day-to-day management of staff and operations, and policy execution. The ED must move capably and confidently between a wide range of responsibilities, including executive level leadership, financial management, human resources, public and community relations, board and volunteer relations, and staff oversight.
The ED reports to the Board of Directors.
High Priority Responsibilities for the next Executive Director
♦ Strengthening Operations — Developing and executing new financial management and reporting systems
♦ Retreat Programming — Developing a team to create new curricula and facilitators for retreats, and develop more integration between the retreat and farm programs at CFET
♦ Fundraising – Developing and implementing a strategy for individual and corporate donations
Essential Duties
♦ Oversees and reports on operating plans, budgets, cash flow and finances
♦ Coordinates volunteers, together with others
♦ Articulates CFET’s mission and vision to internal and external audiences
♦ Coordinates retreat programming
o Marketing, planning, execution and evaluation
♦ Oversees and executes fundraising strategy, including grant writing, individual and corporate donations
♦ Supervises personnel and non-traditional staff, including interns, AmeriCorps members and volunteers
♦ Represents the CFET to the media; Sacred Heart parish, the neighborhood, city and region
♦ Reports to the President of the Board and the Board of Trustees
Ideal Qualifications
♦ Passionate commitment to environmental justice, food justice and sustainability
♦ Ability to integrate contemporary science, spirituality and environmental issues with the aim of empowering personal and communal change.
♦ Experience in farming or community gardening
♦ Executive management experience in a non-profit setting including supervision of staff, oversight of financial reporting, development of budgets, and working with a Board of Trustees.
♦ Personal attributes such as the ability to relate with people of all ages, develop trust and engender collaboration, communicate confidently and effectively, and strive for excellence.
Required Qualifications
♦ Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in pertinent training or experience/Advanced degree desirable
♦ Proven experience in planning and facilitating retreats
♦ Proven success in grant writing and fundraising
♦ Excellent written, oral communication, and relationship-building skills with an ability to prioritize, negotiate, and work with a variety of internal and external stakeholders.
♦ Solid working knowledge of budgeting, business development, and strategic planning
♦ Demonstrated ability to implement projects and adhere to established timelines. Must be able to manage projects independently and prioritize tasks.
♦ Financial oversight experience, including knowledge of QuickBooks accounting software, and experience in cost saving in the non-profit setting.
♦ Commitment to volunteer development programs that maximize individual and organizational goals.
♦ Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and dedication to the mission
