Women Against Abuse, the city’s leading domestic violence service provider, is looking for an experienced professional to join its advocacy program as a Staff Attorney!
Summary of Principle Duties:
Provide legal representation to victims of domestic violence across a range of issues, including protections from abuse, child custody, support and any related matter of legal significance (may provide this legal representation for a specialized group of clients). Responsibilities will include but are not limited to the following range of services: litigating cases originating as domestic violence matters; conducting client interviews, making court appearances, representing clients in trials, and performing all necessary legal work; participating in program evaluation and planning to ensure that the Legal Center is improving the legal system’s response to battered women; and providing functional supervision of Legal Center staff working on assigned cases. All responsibilities are implemented according to our mission and values and according to Agency standards, including the Sanctuary Model ®.
Requirements:
- A Juris Doctorate, with a current license to practice law in the State of Pennsylvania, required.
- Familiarity with the court system in regard to domestic violence issues is strongly preferred.
- Experience with legal representation to victims of domestic violence preferred.
- Demonstrated excellent written, oral and interpersonal skills are required.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively represent an advocacy agency or function is required.
- Demonstrated ability to organize time and detail, including keeping of records, is preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse population is required.
- Demonstrated commitment to service of others is required.
- Completion of the 45-hour Domestic Training Class is required (pre or post hire)
- Bilingualism, Spanish/English is strongly preferred.
Schedule: 40 hours per week, Monday – Friday, 9:00am-5:00pm
