Course Description
This course focuses on student reflection activities as a source of meaning-making in service-learning, in which students experience significant learning outcomes. Although the focus of this course is on service-learning, it speaks to student affairs professionals in a variety of areas who utilize reflection activities, including leadership development, community service, first year programs, and other co-curricular programs. Participants in this course will review the major literature on service-learning, and will discuss the variety of ways to shape reflection activities, rooted in the literature on reflection. The framework for this course will be based on a study revealing the Recurring Stages of Student Reflection in a Service-Learning Course (Green, 2006).

This model is of great import for instructors to facilitate reflection, enhance the service-learning course experience, and mediate the learning outcomes. The conclusions and implications of this course will offer facilitators of reflection and service-learning opportunities not only a framework to implement service-learning reflection, but also a model from which to facilitate and mediate reflection, thus increasing the learning outcomes of the service-learning and varied forms of experiential learning.

Learning Outcomes

* Participants will understand where reflection fits in the literature on service-learning;
* Participants will identify practical models of implementation for reflection activities;
* Participants will learn the Recurring Stages of Student Reflection model and apply them to individualized/institutional frameworks;
* Participants will interact with other professionals to apply the models of reflection and exchange ideas.

Continuing Education Credits
This course is eligible for a maximum of 1.5 CEU credits through the National Board of Certified Counselors (NBCC). ACPA is an official NBCC provider. The CEU total is based on the expectation that a course participant will devote a maximum of 5 hours per week (3 weeks total) to the assignments and projects. A CEU form must be completed and returned to the ACPA International Office following the conclusion of the course.
