The Mexico Summer Project is Recruiting for 2007!

The American Friends Service Committee is pleased to announce The Mexico Summer Project 2007! Embarking on its 68th year of work with rural Mexican Indigenous communities, the project seeks youth eighteen to twenty-six years old and proficient in Spanish to participate this year, from June 30 to August 18, 2007. Application deadlines are March 26th, 2007.

The Program
The Mexico Summer Project strives to raise the consciousness of its participants allowing them to become more aware of how an individual’s personal experiences are connected to and effect larger societal problems and solutions. Youth from the Americas, Europe and Mexico engage in work projects for sustainable development and cultural exchange workshops as a medium for learning. Participants live as a community in Totonaca and Nahua indigenous villages in the mountainous northeastern region of Puebla, Mexico, commonly called the Sierra Norte de Puebla.

Qualifications
Participants must be mature individuals, 18-26 years old and able to communicate well in Spanish, the language of the project at all times. AFSC seeks applicants who are interested in service, advocacy, and social justice?both in Latin America and their own communities.

Costs
Participants are responsible for a $1,350 project fee, which covers food, lodging, and transportation related to the project. Participants are also responsible for the cost of their travel to and from Mexico City. Scholarships are available that cover 80% of project costs and airfare!

We have space to accept up to 30 participants and 5 facilitators from the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico (applicants from other countries should contact SEDEPAC).

The Mexico Summer Project is run in collaboration with Servicio, Desarollo, y Paz, A.C. (SEDEPAC), a prominent Mexican non-governmental organization who works closely with Unidad Ind?gena Totonaca Nahuatl (UNITONA) an indigenous development organization in the area.
