CORE Philly Scholarship Program

The CORE Philly Scholarship Program is pleased to announce its 2005-2006 application period will begin on April 1, 2005. Students who are eligible for this scholarship must:
– Be residents of Philadelphia along with one parent,
– Plan to attend Community College of Philadelphia, one of the 14 State System of Higher Education Institutions or one of the 4 state-related universities and
– Apply for federal and state financial aid as verified by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Details on the CORE Philly Scholarship applications will be online beginning April 1st at <a href="http://www.corephilly.org">http://www.corephilly.org</a>. The application period will close June 1, 2005. There will be a special page on the website for counselors and college advisers.

The CORE Philly Scholarship was inaugurated last year through the convening of Congressman Chaka Fattah. Mayor John F. Street and Mr. Paul Vallas, CEO of the School District of Philadelphia with the approval of Philadelphia City Council and the School Reform Commission agreed to cooperatively pledge $40 million for 4-years to provide scholarships for Philadelphia high school residents to attend college. The purpose of this need-based scholarship for the freshman year is to assist families with the cost of higher education and not see finances as a barrier to attending college.
