Voluntarism on the Rise Despite Decline in Charitable Giving

While donations to charitable organizations are declining, voluntarism continues to rise across the nation, CBS MarketWatch reports.
According to Giving and Volunteering in the United States 2001, the seventh in a series of biennial surveys by Independent Sector ( http://www.independentsector.org/ ), a national nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the work of the philanthropic sector, nearly half of U.S. adults volunteer time at least once a year to nonprofit organizations. With charitable giving expected to fall for the second year in a row, Pat Bohse, head of nonprofit consulting firm Bohse & Associates ( http://bohse.com/ ), is advising nonprofits to "ask for volunteers and professional services." Her firm estimates that about 110 million adults currently volunteer with nonprofits, up from about 80 million in 1987.
