Keep PA Beautiful Environmental Internship Program

Posted by on April 9, 2007

Keep PA Beautiful, in partnership with Philly Green, Philly Mural Arts, and the PA Downtown Center supports a summer internship program for talented college students with a desire to be apart of positive change in urban areas. This summer we are planning about a dozen community based revitalization projects that should appeal to students with an interest in the environment and community organizing.

We offer graduate students $3,000.00 and undergraduate students $2,000.00 for the summer and we will work with interns to arrange housing.

*Internship Description:*

Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful in partnership with Philadelphia Green, The Philadelphia Mural Arts Program, and The Pennsylvania Downtown Center is offering college students an exciting opportunity to work with urban communities to plan and implement community enhancement projects. The focus of each project is decided by our community partners and can range from vacant land restoration, to murals, to community parks and gardens, and to environmental education programs.

During the summer of 2007, the 11 week internship program will place 15 intern teams at different project sites throughout Pennsylvania. The teams will be made up of two to three students from a mix of academic disciplines. Participating students receive project specific training at our four day orientation hosted by Philadelphia Green. Housing is provided at no cost to interns who may need it. Also, all of the internships are paid and undergraduate students receive $2,000.00 and graduate students receive $3,000.00.

Internships are competitive and we only have a limited number of internship slots. We recruit and select talented students from all across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions of the US. Additionally, our admissions process is rolling, so the sooner students apply the more likely they are to be accepted. Philadelphia, Allegheny East
Urban Design and Planning Project

Allegheny East is an historic working class section of Philadelphia. This area of Philadelphia went through very dramatic population losses between 1990 and 2000. Fortunately, Allegheny East has recently become the focus of many successful economic and community enhancements.

Contributing to the revitalizations efforts afoot in the area, The Hispanic Association of Contractors and Enterprises (HACE) is proposing an urban design and planning project. Interns will work closely with HACE and community members to generate an analysis and design recommendations for recreational areas within the neighborhood and implement a small portion of the recommendations.

Students with a background in landscape architecture, environmental science, geography, architecture, urban planning, community organizing, education, and social work are encouraged to apply.

Kennett Square, Historic East Linden
Urban Landscape Design Project

Kennett Square is nationally known for its mushrooms, Longwood Gardens, and a quaint downtown. This summer, interns will work with Kennett Square’s Alliance for Better Housing to create sustainable landscaping and gardening designs for individual homeowners using native plant species.

Interns will work on five properties already selected by the Alliance for Better Housing’s Safe, Clean & Green Committee. Each landscape and gardening project will engage members of the community and serve as a model for other Historic East Linden properties.

Students with a background in landscape architecture/contracting, environmental science, geography, education, or horticulture are encouraged to apply. Also, because of a large Spanish speaking demographic, interns with Spanish speaking skills are also encouraged to apply.
