Education Coordinator
The Education Coordinator is a full time position reporting directly to the Associate Director. The Education Coordinator supports the organization?s work in program design and implementation, outreach and recruitment, and program evaluation for the Asian Arts Initiative?s youth and adult arts programs. These programs include:
YouthArtWorks (YAW):
The Asian Arts Initiative hosts a series of ongoing yearly youth arts workshops. By providing art-making opportunities and a safe space for Asian American teens, teens are given an opportunity to explore and express their experiences and connect with others in their community. Projects over the years have included theater, spoken word, poetry, writing, documentary video, narrative film, short video, drawing/painting, mural making, hip-hop dance, DJ techniques, and many more.
Artists in Communities Training (ACT):
is a professional development course designed to give artists facilitation and teaching skills needed in school and community settings. By providing a course that builds essential skills in communication, lesson planning, classroom, and group management, the Asian Arts Initiative aims to expand the pool of artists of color of all disciplines who can actively convey the power of art-making into the hands of everyday people.
Responsibilities for the Education Coordinator include:
Marketing:
Create content for YAW and ACT programs for the website, newsletter, press inquiries, and email listserv. Provide content and layout ideas for the production of marketing materials.
Curriculum Development:
Work with Executive Director and individual artists to develop and refine curriculum for YAW and ACT. Work with Executive Director in creating educational activities (I.e. gallery tours, walking tours) for current public programs. Create reading packet for Artists Exchange.
Outreach:
Organize teaching artists to identify and visit local public schools, community centers, colleges, universities, etc. to meet and recruit participants for YAW. Participate in in-school and community organization visits with teaching artists. Plan and ensure audiences for YAW and ACT-related events. Attend community meetings, site visits, and other events to represent YAW and ACT programs as determined necessary.
Recruitment:
Create and implement recruitment strategies for programs. Respond to incoming calls and requests for YAW and ACT program info.
Leadership Development:
Design and implement strategies around youth leadership development through internships, training/professional development, and the revival of the Youth Leadership Council.
Logistics & Planning:
Conduct registration for classes and workshops. Ensure adequate class size, attendance, and participant retention. Serve as liaison between Asian Arts Initiative and outside consultants/artists. Organize orientations and closing ceremonies for all programs.
Coordinate teaching artists and assistants year-round. Revise and mail YAW and ACT artists and partner contracts with supervision from Associate Director. Arrange facilities usage for set up and clean up for YAW and ACT activities.
Data Collection:
Design and distribute pre and post assessments of YAW and ACT programs. Assist Associate Director in compiling and writing information for grant applications and final reports. Distribute and collect participants’ forms such as permission slips, medical forms, media release forms, and others. Support Program Assistant in developing evaluation materials – provide content for materials.
Professional Development:
Actively seek and attend professional development opportunities (I.e. lectures, conferences, youth open houses, etc.) where Education Coordinator will represent Asian Arts Initiative. Actively seek and attend professional networking opportunities and trainings that will raise visibility for organization
Curating:
Participate in curatorial process as necessary.
Product Sales and Distribution:
Coordinate distribution of Asian Arts Initiative program products such as books, printed materials, DVD’s, video, shirts, and other merchandise. Work with Associate Director to design and implement website product sales plan.
Booking:
Coordinate booking of Asian Arts Initiative events for local and national touring opportunities. Work with Associate Director to determine fees for touring.
Budget:
Participate in budget management process of public and educational programs with Associate Director. Work with AD to develop and become very familiar with program budget.
Requirements:
? Multiple years of experience in education and/or arts education
? Proven ability to develop and implement curriculum plans, especially with integration of skills building and thematic focus
? Excellent project management and time management skills
? Supervisory experience
? Commitment to working with artists in multiple disciplines
? Strong public speaking presence, ability to represent organization
? Proficient knowledge of basic computer desktop applications (MS Office); Photoshop; Filemaker Pro.
