Internship/work-study positions, Philadelphia Public School Notebook
Are you concerned about improving urban public education? Want to learn more about the independent media and publishing? Philadelphia Public School Notebook, an independent quarterly newspaper that serves as an information source and a voice for those trying to improve Philadelphia?s public schools ? parents, students, educators, and concerned citizens – has work-study positions or unpaid internships available.
WEB EDITOR:
The Notebook is ready to launch its recently designed website, and is seeking an intern with web experience to maintain and expand the site. The site includes current issues and archives of the Notebook, organizational information, links, and some interactive features. Duties may include updating the site with recent issues of the newspaper, expanding the archives, doing promotional work and troubleshooting, researching and posting education-focused Internet resources, and assisting with production and dissemination of a monthly electronic newsletter.
Experience with web design is required. Intern should also possess strong communications skills and an interest in community-oriented, advocacy journalism. While hours are flexible, interns must have some time availability during normal weekday business hours.
MARKETING ASSISTANT:
The Notebook is working to expand its revenue from subscriptions and advertising and its free circulation (currently totaling 52,000). The marketing assistant will develop and implement strategies for expanding advertising and circulation, including: surveying and analyzing our current readership; developing promotional materials for potential subscribers and advertisers; developing contact lists; organizing promotional mailings; identifying advertisers by phone and in person. The intern will gain exposure to newspaper business management.
