Baltimore Avenue Internship

BALTIMORE AVENUE INTERNSHIP ? 2003
The Intern will work directly with the Corridor Manager for Baltimore Avenue and will ultimately report to the Director, Neighborhood Initiatives. The focus of the activities will be on Baltimore Avenue from 45th to 50th Streets. The intern will work at the corridor office (50th and Baltimore) and, when required, the UCD office (3940 Chestnut). The position is available May 1 ? August 30th, with a flexible beginning date. The intern will be expected to work from 20 ? 40 hours per week and will receive $10/ per hour.
Duties will include, but not be limited to:
1. Work with the Corridor Manager, representatives from Calvary Center, Partners for Sacred Places and the Community to develop and implement a pilot exterior lighting program for this key landmark along Baltimore Avenue. This project requires development of a strategic plan, identification of potential funding sources, and coordination with architects and designers.
2. Work with the Corridor Manager and the business owners to develop a business association. This project requires an ability to work across cultures, to understand and respond to the challenges faced by owners of small businesses, and to organize and implement strategic plans.
3. Work with the Corridor Manager to develop the launch of events that promote shopping along the retail corridor.
4. Develop and conduct an updated study of the perceptions of Baltimore Avenue and a pedestrian traffic study.
Qualifications: Urban studies, city planning and/or related academic background will be helpful. Demonstrated experience in working with other cultures is preferred and familiarity in working with owners of small businesses is helpful. Knowledge of the University City community ? outside the campus boarders ? is extremely helpful.
