American Legacy Foundation Invites Applications for Truth or Consequences Youth Tobacco Prevention Grants Program

In 2006, the American Legacy Foundation (<a href="http://americanlegacy.org/">http://americanlegacy.org/</a>) received a matching grant from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (<a href="http://www.cdc.gov/">http://www.cdc.gov/</a>) to deliver the foundation’s successful "truth" youth smoking prevention campaign to more young people across the United States. Through the grant from the CDC, the foundation is increasing its advertising in forty-one television market regions, spanning eighteen states. The increased "truth" advertising is reaching a broader range of youth in the regions, including young people in communities that typically have less exposure to such campaigns. To enhance the impact of the media campaign, Legacy is offering grant funding to support community- based tobacco use prevention efforts in the eighteen project states.

Under the program, organizations will leverage the enhanced "truth" media campaign in their area by developing local tobacco use prevention projects that are relevant to open-to-smoking, 12- to 17-year-old youths in the community and engage and promote young people as agents of social change. Specifically, grantees will design and implement a youth-driven tobacco use prevention project focused on creating change in the community. Tobacco use may be defined as cigarette and/or smokeless tobacco use.

Funding is available only to state or local political subdivisions and legally constituted tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organizations based in the forty-six states, the District of Columbia, and five territories (American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands) identified in the 1998 Master Settlement Agreement with tobacco product manufacturers. An Indian reservation, Indian tribe, or tribal organization located within the forty-six settling states or a non-governmental entity that serves such a reservation may also apply for funding. Groups operating under a 501(c)(3) fiscal agent may apply through the fiscal agent.

Qualified organizations from any of the states and territories identified in the MSA are eligible for funding, but projects must be implemented in the eighteen states, which include Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Tennessee, Vermont, Washington, and Wyoming.
