We would like to let you know about a special book discussion opportunity at Project H.O.M.E. surrounding The Soloist by Steve Lopez, formerly of the Philadelphia Inquirer. This true story is the Free Library’s 2009 selection for “One Book, One Philadelphia” and follows Nathanial Anthony Ayers, a talented musician Steve noticed playing a two-string violin on LA’s Skid Row. When Steve decides to make Nathaniel the subject of his column in the LA Times, he discovers how much more to Nathaniel there is than his homelessness and mental health struggle. What follows is an illuminating portrait of their friendship.

Nathaniel and Steve’s story provides the reader a greater understanding not only of the realities of homelessness and mental health, but also of the complicated way that relationships develop because of, and in spite of, these hardships. While the Free Library is organizing other events related to The Soloist, we invite you to attend one of three gatherings specifically for the Project H.O.M.E. community. We will bring staff, residents, volunteers, and friends together to talk openly and honestly about the book and how it compares to the realities we witness on a daily basis here in Philadelphia.
