Sound Partners for Community Health Grant Program

Sound Partners for Community Health brings together public broadcasters and community organizations to solve problems around local health and healthcare issues using a variety of programming and community engagement techniques. The program represents a partnership between the Benton Foundation (<a href="http://www.benton.org/">http://www.benton.org/</a>) and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (<a href="http://www.rwjf.org/">http://www.rwjf.org/</a>) and is designed to address a core component of each foundation’s mission: fostering healthy communities through collaborative use of local media.

Sound Partners grantees are required to engage the community through broadcasts and outreach around specific health issues. Stations and their partners use the funding and technical support to produce lively, award-winning coverage and outreach activities targeting a wide cross-section of their communities.

Grants are awarded to public broadcasters and community groups that submit proposals demonstrating how community-centered journalism and active partnerships with community organizations can positively affect the ways in which local healthcare issues are addressed. The fourth round of funding will include up to forty grants of up to $7,500 each to community organizations partnering with public radio and television broadcasters. In addition, up to ten Media Partner grants of $10,000 will be available to collaborations that incorporate additional media partners to extend the impact of the outreach activity.

All public radio and public television stations that receive community service grants from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting are eligible to apply, as are members of the National Federation of Community Broadcasters. However, applicants must have 501(c)(3) status or be a government-related organization.

In addition, public radio stations in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, West Virginia, and East Texas that receive community service grants from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting or who are members of the National Federation of Community Broadcasters are eligible to apply for Rural Health Care Access Grants.
