Working Title: Teaching Tolerance and Valuing Diversity: Using Service-Learning as a teaching strategy

Call for Chapters Deadline: Completed chapters must be submitted by October 1, 2007

Description of the Text: As issues of diversity in the United States become more and more prevalent, and conflicts in communities become more intense, it is essential that the new academy find ways to educate students to successfully navigate the changing world and to serve as resources for community problem-solving. Higher education is under increasing pressure to prepare students for a very different world than what their parents experienced. Issues such as immigration, ethnicity, religious philosophy, and sexual orientation divide our cities, neighborhoods, and schools. As more pressure is put on the academy to move from the ivory tower to address real problems of today’s world, we must find ways to educate students that provide opportunities to engage that world in which they live.

Service-learning, in its many forms, is one way for the academy to reach out to the community and to engage students while at the same time serving as a resource to community based organizations.

This inter-disciplinary text will address the importance of incorporating the contemporary social issues of teaching tolerance and valuing diversity into higher education. Written in a format that is accessible to academics and to members of community-based organizations, the text will serve as a resource for all who are engaged in educating students to become active participants in our democratic society. Preference will be given to chapters that include assessment data. We strongly encourage academics to collaborate with community partners in writing their chapters.

Submission Procedure: Faculty and community-based professionals are invited to submit completed chapters (20 pages maximum) for review no later than October 1, 2007. Authors are required to use APA style guidelines. Each proposed chapter will be peer-reviewed by at least three reviewers using a double-blind review process. All authors will be notified no later than Jan. 1, 2008. At that time, authors of accepted chapters will be given an opportunity to revise their chapters. Final manuscripts will be due to the volume editors no later than Feb. 1, 2008. The volume is scheduled to be released in fall 2008.
