This conference is designed to showcase an exciting three-year project called Living Democracy – a rich collaboration between three state Departments of Education in Maine, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island, the KIDS Consortium (based in Lewiston, Maine), Bates College, the Center for Youth Development at Brandeis University, and sixteen school districts from the three states. Funding for Living Democracy is provided by the Learn and Serve America Program at the Corporation for National and Community Service.

Through Living Democracy, exemplary service-learning projects were designed and implemented that enabled the study of history and civics to come alive for thousands of K-12 students across New England. Teams of teachers, working with their local curriculum staff and community partners, also developed models for embedding service-learning into the social studies curriculum at the middle and high school levels.

At the conference, you will:
— LEARN about the KIDS as Planners Service-Learning Model and academic, civic and social impacts on middle and high school students.
— EXPERIENCE a Civic Forum a deliberation process for exploring historic documents with students in the context of service-learning projects.
— HEAR FROM New England school districts about different approaches for integrating service-learning into the curriculum and assessment requirements for social studies.
— MEET WITH teachers and students who have implemented service-learning projects that include explorations of local/state history and also focus on civic knowledge and skills.
— LEARN ABOUT funding and policy strategies for sustaining service-learning from school, business, and state/national service-learning and civic engagement organizations.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND: Service-learning practitioners; Social Studies educators; Service-learning coordinators; Curriculum Directors; K-12 School Administrators; Faculty at Colleges of Education; and Community organizations and civic leaders engaged in partnerships with K-12 schools related to history and civics.
