When: Monday, March 27 & Tuesday, March 28, 2006

Where: Southern Methodist University’s (SMU) Legacy Campus

What: A national institute where educators and experts can exchange and discuss knowledge gleaned from scientifically based reading research.

The Institute will address (1) how children learn to read, (2) why some children have difficulties learning to read, (3) how we can remediate reading difficulties, and (4) how we can prevent reading difficulties.

Sessions will deliver information and best practices on phonological awareness, phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, comprehension, vocabulary development, assessment, adolescent literacy, family literacy, instruction, writing skills, and other reading and language disorders.

Post-institute sessions, to be held March 29 – 31, 2006, include LETRS Modules 1, 2, and 3 (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling), and more will soon be announced.
