HEARING AND TELLING: ESSENTIAL SKILLS FOR INTERCULTURAL SERVICE-LEARNING
Rapid City, South Dakota

Sponsored by the International Partnership for Service Learning and Leadership and South Dakota State University

This conference bring together educators and service providers from around the world to consider how service-learning lays the foundation for leadership that in turn builds stronger, healthier and more peaceful societies. Using the Lakota Nation context as an example of such development, the conference will include lectures, concurrent sessions, discussion groups, and poster sessions; a visit to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation service-learning sites, Wounded Knee, and Red Cloud Mission; and optional sight-seeing tours to Bear Butte, Devil’s Tower, Crazy Horse, Mt. Rushmore, and the Black Hills. The primary theme of the conference will be the value of story-telling and listening in service learning, with explorations of how American Indian cultures offer insights into refining these skills. Evening activities will include story-telling sessions and a cultural performance.
