Lessons from Liverpool, England, and Providence, Rhode Island
June 5, 6 & 7, 2005
Liverpool and Providence, once successful port cities built on trade in the 19th and early 20th centuries, fell into notorious decline by the 1970s. Jobs disappeared, people abandoned the city center and social and physical fabric decayed. Beginning in the late 1980s and 1990s, both cities saw a remarkable turn-around. Today, Providence is hailed as being ?Renaissance City? and is often named as one of the 10 best cities for living in America. Similarly, Liverpool has seen a rebirth of its economic vitality and has been proclaimed the European Capital of Culture for 2008.
