Gulf-South SUMMIT on Service-Learning and Civic Engagement through Higher Education

On behalf of the Florida Campus Compact, Brevard Community College, Florida Institute of Technology, University of Central Florida and the Planning Committee, I would like to invite you to the Gulf-South SUMMIT on Service-Learning and Civic Engagement through Higher Education, Cocoa Beach, Florida, April 6-8, 2005.
Join the more than 250 service-learning practitioners (higher education faculty, staff, students, administrators; and community based organization representatives) expected to attend the SUMMIT at the Cocoa Beach Hilton Oceanfront on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean. The goals of the SUMMIT are as follows:
1. To explore the roles and responsibilities of higher education in civic engagement.
2. To build greater awareness of service-learning and civic engagement activities throughout the South
3. To facilitate dialogue and networking among service-learning advocates and practitioners in the South.
4. To foster the development of service-learning and civic engagement infrastructures within post-secondary institutions as a means of institutional and faculty renewal.
5. To provide a forum for presenting and discussing service-learning research.
6. To explore the theoretical and practical implications of service-learning and civic engagement.
7. To increase knowledge about effective partnerships for higher education institutions, and community based organizations and projects including K-12.
Keynote Speakers for the SUMMIT include:
– Kerrisa Heffernan, Associate Director of the Swearer Center for Public Service at Brown University and Director of the Royce Fellowship
– Edward Zlotkowski, Professor of English at Bentley College, and Senior Faculty Fellow at Campus Compact
– Michelle Dunlap, Associate Professor of Human Development at Connecticut College
– Paul Elsner, Chancellor Emeritus, Maricopa Community College District
