Join us in beautiful Sarasota, FL on February 3-5, 2005 for the 3rd Annual Service-Learning & The Arts Conference entitled “Arts, Culture, and Community: A Service-Learning Approach.” The conference will be hosted at The Ringling School of Art and Design, with a reception on February 3rd at The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art.

Philosophy Behind the Conference: Human existence is based upon the ability to comprehend, create, and communicate meaning. Our attempts to establish this meaning lead us to create symbolic relationships that ultimately define our community and culture. The arts have always been a part of the foundation and framework of our cultural heritage, so how can we preserve this vehicle of meaning during economic change and with the public questioning the value of art? How can we involve students, educators, and community members in this search for artistic creation and preservation? Service-Learning reflects the belief that education must be linked to social responsibility. It includes a myriad of ways that students can perform meaningful service to their communities and to society, while engaging in some form of reflection that is related to the service.
Who Should Attend:
Higher education arts faculty, higher education arts administrators/staff, K-12 faculty, K-12 administrators/staff, community arts organizations, and anyone else who is interested in learning how to integrate service-learning into the arts are all welcome!
