Democracy and Empowerment: Funding for Civic Engagement and Justice

Neighborhood Funders Group Annual Conference, September 13-15, 2004

With the backdrop of national and local elections, we will explore the critical role that foundations can play in their support of non-profits organizations endeavoring to increase voter and civic engagement and participation, especially among those whose voices have been increasingly marginalized, immigrants, the working poor, and people of color.

The conference will foster opportunities for our members to learn about exciting and effective examples of organizations that enable low and moderate-income people to become more involved and more influential in the democratic process and public policy advocacy on a broad range of issues of interest to our members.

The conference will further explore a number of critical issues: the role of non-profits in electoral politics; the responsibility of foundations to foster democratic participation; the efficacy of building broad coalitions among unlikely allies, such as organized labor; and the implications and challenges of supporting non-profits that focus on political participation and public policy advocacy.
