Each Institute includes essential tools and information about a specific area of service-learning.

Introduction to Service-Learning

What is service-learning and how do you get started? The answers are all here. Introduction to Service-Learning provides you with the all the basics. This one-day session covers the definition and rationale for service-learning, The Service-Learning Cycle, community needs assessment, an overview of curriculum integration, and the “nuts and bolts” of implementing service-learning projects.

Curricular Connections

Successful service-learning requires clear learning objectives and the close integration of service activities with academic curriculum. This in-depth session covers the tools and strategies necessary for making those connections, including curriculum examples, methods for connecting service activities and learning goals, how to address standards, ways to manage cross-disciplinary and cross-grade integration, the Curriculum Game, and hands-on scenarios.

Curricular Connections is for those who have attended Introduction to Service-Learning or have already had service-learning training.

Sessions are led by NYLC Lead Trainer Verna Cornelia Price, Ph.D. For more than 15 years, Verna has worked as an educator, educational consultant, and trainer, earning a national reputation for creating programs and processes that increase organizational effectiveness and individual performance. She is a teacher to the core, having taught preschool, fifth and sixth grades, and college.

Times: Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. each day, and trainings run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Location: NYLC Training Center, TIES Building, 1667 Snelling Avenue N., Third Floor, St. Paul, MN 55108 (near the State Fairgrounds at Larpenteur and Snelling).
Fee: $150 for a single-day and $275 for two-days. Fee includes lunch and training materials.

Lodging
Accommodations are available at the Country Inn and Suites in Roseville, Minn. Rooms are available at a special rate of $80 per night plus tax, for a single, double, triple, or quad room (continental breakfast included). To receive this rate, call the inn at (651) 628-3500 at least 30 days before the training, and ask for the National Youth Leadership Council room block.
