Continuums of Service Conference: Is Higher Education a Public Good?

The Western Region Campus Compact Consortium invites your participation in the Seventh Annual Continuums of Service Conference, March 10-12, 2004, at the Hyatt Regency Islandia in San Diego, California. CONFERENCE TITLE AND THEME
Entitled “Is Higher Education a Public Good? Service-Learning, Civic Engagement, and the Public Purposes of Education,” the conference will bring together more than 400 colleagues from the western region and beyond to explore multiple perspectives on the relationship between higher education and the public good, and the role service-learning and civic engagement can play in revitalizing it. SESSION FORMATS AND TRACKS
The Continuums of Service advisory committee is soliciting proposals for more than 50 concurrent sessions, including skill-building workshops, foundational issue forums, and poster presentations. Building on an evolving tradition at the Continuums of Service conference, three concurrent session tracks will focus on students, community partnerships, and faculty roles and rewards. All sessions will be 90 minutes in length, and may be facilitated by one or more individuals. We encourage the development of interactive workshops, with time for discussion and questions. ONLINE PROPOSAL GUIDELINES AND SUBMISSION FORM
Please visit http://www.acadweb.wwu.edu/campcomp/index.html for proposal guidelines and instructions on how to submit your proposal(s) online. Proposals must be received by Friday, December 12, 2003. Applicants will be notified in January 2004. If your proposal is accepted, you will need to register for the conference. Presenters will receive a 10% discount on the registration price. Registration materials will be available online in December 2003.

CONFERENCE AUDIENCE
As in years past, conference participants will include learners and educators from diverse constituencies: faculty, undergraduate and graduate students, government, community agency and organization partners, student development professionals, curriculum specialists, service-learning directors, funding agency representatives, and institutional administrators, among others.

CONFERENCE GOALS
–enhance practical service-learning skills and deepen philosophical understanding of participants at all levels of familiarity
–explore diverse perspectives on service-learning theory and practice
–practice critical reflection
–offer provocative, inclusive, and interactive conference sessions
–provide opportunities for informal discussions and networking
–continue to build our regional network of service-learning colleagues
–showcase regional service-learning efforts
–celebrate success, rejuvenate, and reconnect ourselves to the broader service community
