Anti-Bias Education: Practice, Research, and Theory
A conference on anti-bias education and intergroup relations research will be held on June 6-8, 2003 at the Hilton Hotel in Evanston, Illinois (easily accessible from Chicago’s O’Hare airport). The goal of the conference is mold the future of anti-bias, multicultural, and social justice education by bringing together practitioners and researchers to share state-of-the-art knowledge, strategies, theories, models, research results, and applications in our fragmented field. The conference will provide intergroup relations researchers with information on best practices in anti-bias education and expand the theoretical and research knowledge of educational practitioners. These goals will be achieved through plenary sessions, symposia presentations, pre-conference workshops (June 6th), posters, invited speakers, and informal discussions. This relatively small conference (200 participants) will also provide opportunities for coalition building and collaboration between practitioners and researchers.
There will be two keynote speakers: Dr. James A. Banks, who is the Director of the Center for Multicultural Education at the University of Washington and Margot Stern Strom, who is the Executive Director and President of the Facing History and Ourselves National Foundation. The conference sponsors are The American Jewish Committee (Chicago) and the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues.
Symposia are solicited in two domains: practice and research. Practice topics might include, early childhood interventions, primary school programs, secondary school programs, programs in higher educational settings, training pre-service and in-service teachers, essentials of successful programs, and critical challenges facing anti-bias programs. Research topics might include, techniques of combating stereotyping, prejudice, and discrimination, psychological processes underlying anti-bias programs, hate crime/bullying, new directions in intergroup relations theory, recent research on categorization, stereotyping, prejudice and
discrimination, empathy and other affective processes in anti-bias programs, identity development, and developmental issues relevant to anti-bias education programs. Similarly, workshops are solicited for topics such as: training trainers, seeking funding, and program evaluation.
