Cambodian Association of Greater Philadelphia needs tutors for programs in South Philadelphia
The Cambodian Association of Greater Philadelphia (CAGP), Inc. is a non-profit, 501 (c) (3) agency founded in 1979. Our mission is to improve the quality of life for Cambodian-Americans within Greater Philadelphia by providing direct services, advocating and empowering them to obtain equal access to social/economic development, including quality health care and education. We also seek to promote racial harmony between Cambodians and our neighbors by fostering better communication, networking and promoting cultural awareness. Since our inception, we have developed and implemented many social, educational and cultural programs aimed at assisting our Cambodian American families to become self-sufficient.
The Cambodian Association has developed and implemented two major programs that have served to be valuable and long-standing resources for members in our community?the After-School Program (also called the Youth & Family Enrichment Program) and the Summer Camp Enrichment Program. The After-School Program runs Monday through Friday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. the time of day when children are most vulnerable. Our program includes daily homework help and tutoring/mentoring. The Summer Camp Enrichment Program is the summer counterpart to the After-School Program and is a full-day program. Each program serves 30 children ages 5-11 (K-5th) and incorporates academic, social, and cultural components in the curriculum to help our children grow into productive, self-sufficient adults equipped with the tools to make informed life choices.
We also implemented a literacy program for the year 2006-2007 from 4:30-6:00 p.m. Monday thru Thursday. We implemented YET (Youth Education for Tomorrow), a Philadelphia-based after-school and summer literacy program established by Public Private Venture (P/PV). PPV designs, test and studies initiatives that increase supports, skills and opportunities of residents of low-income communities.
If you are interested in volunteering for the After-School Program, please contact Koeun Chea, our After-School Program Director.
