volunteers are needed to provide workshops as well as to help run this event!

GEAR UP Student Conference 2004
Theme: Raising the Bar: Accessing Success for Tomorrow?s Leaders

When: May 21st-23rd, 2004
Location: The Philadelphia Marriott, Downtown
Who: 250 10th and 11th grade students from other GEAR UP projects in the Tri-State Area and from our project?s 8 GEAR UP high schools.

Our students will come away from this conference having gained?
? A broader knowledge base of the potential careers that are available to them beyond the ?typical? careers they hear about everyday, and the ability to make the connection between that career and the educational path they must take to achieve their goals.

? The knowledge of what is expected of them in a professional setting. These students will learn what the expectations are concerning professional etiquette and standards by participating in activities and workshops such as resume writing, a business dinner, mock interviewing and public speaking. These things will ultimately help our students during college interviews and overall self presentation.

? A more detailed understanding of campus life at a college or university. These students will understand the terms commonly used on college campuses as well as common issues college students deal with everyday like academic preparation, self advocacy, time management, class schedules and social pitfalls.
