Team Democracy GOTV Drive

Posted by on September 20, 2002

Team Democracy is looking for a few good women (and men – actually we want to hear from a lot of men and women from every Party, County and political philosophy). The assignment, if you choose to accept it, is to serve as a GOTV Team Leader for your organization. GOTV is political jargon for “GET OUT THE VOTE!!!!” and for purposes of this newsletter, we define the word organization very broadly: non-profits, corporations, agencies, partnerships, law firms, doctor?s offices, community groups, educational groups, religious groups, labor unions, tennis clubs, book clubs, investment clubs, dormitory floors, dart leagues, literature classes, news rooms, chess teams, community bands, families, etc. Essentially, if you belong to any group which has two or more eligible voters – consider yourself an “organization” for purposes of this newsletter.

To start with, the Team Leader will be the point person for voter registration activities. They will also make sure everyone who qualifies for an absentee or alternative ballot submits an application by the deadline, and make sure these ballots are submitted before the submission deadline. Finally, the Team Leader will remind everyone else to confirm their polling place and vote on election day.

The Committee of Seventy has a solid plan for engaging the electorate, but we cannot succeed without dedicated volunteers like you (election day watchdogs – our 99th class; and Democracy Team Leaders – our 1st class). So whether you want to join a long tradition, or break new ground as we approach our Centennial, this is your chance to serve on the front lines of the Democratic process.
