A recent report prepared by the American Sociological Association (ASA) on “public sociology,” a term popularized by recent ASA president Michael Burawoy. The term covers much of what is discussed under the rubric of community-based research and influencing public policy. Among other things, this document addresses issues related to promotion and tenure.
CCPH member Phil Nyden served as the task force chair.
The report entitled “Public Sociology and The Roots of American Sociology: Re-Establishing Our Connections to The Public” is available at http://pubsoc.wisc.edu/
For more information on the larger discussion (the theme of the 2004 ASA meetings in San Francisco) go to Michael Burawoy’s web site
