Understanding Poverty: Lacking More than Financial Resources
When working with children and adults in poverty, class differences can be difficult to overcome. Ruby Payne?s book, Framework for Understanding Poverty, available from The Resource Center?s lending library, delves into the differences and ?hidden rules? that separate economic classes. Besides having fewer financial resources, Payne explains how individuals in poverty also have fewer emotional, mental, spiritual, and physical resources as well as fewer support systems and role models. The book focuses on the impact of poverty on children?s learning, but is useful to all service providers working in impoverished communities.
