The High Cost of Being Poor
Posted by on February 25, 2005
The Winter 2005 issue from the National Community Tax Coalition of the Annie E. Casey Foundation’s policy magazine, ADVOCASEY, explores “The High Cost of Being Poor.”
An AdvoCasey Briefing spells out the high prices low-income Americans pay for credit, home-ownership, banking, shopping, and medical debts. One article explores alternatives to “payday lending – high-cost cash advances that have proliferated wildly in recent years. Another article examines programs to help low-income workers buy their own cars, and a third details one North Carolina agency’s efforts to combat predatory mortgage lending. AECF President Doug Nelson urges new efforts to lower these excessive costs facing low-income families.
