Summer Food program for rural areas

Posted by on January 14, 2005

Pennsylvania is part of an exciting new Summer Food pilot, which allows rural areas to participate if 40 percent of the children in the area are eligible for free or reduced-price school meals. In all other states, areas must have 50 percent, which can be hard to meet in rural communities. The Pennsylvania Hunger Action Center is holding a series of meetings throughout Pennsylvania to explain the new pilot and facilitate participation by rural summer programs. The Pennsylvania Department of Education will be participating in many of the workshops. For more information, call 717-233-6705 or email info@pahunger.org.

The Summer Food Service Program provides reimbursement for up to two meals a day during the summer. For more information on the Summer Food Program, visit http://www.frac.org/html/federal_food_programs/programs/sfsp.html.
